Benjamin Baker

Born and raised in Sugar Land, Texas, I didn’t know much of Texas Tech or Greek life till it came to apply to college. I’m a first generation Red Raider and the first man in my family to join a Greek fraternity. I originally joined Delta Chi, but quickly learned that was not where I was meant to be. A few weeks later, my roommate introduced me to a guy who would later become my big brother, and not long after, I pledged the Sigma Chi Nu Colony in Fall 2017. I found great friendships and brotherhood among the colony and enjoyed our tight knit group, but I also found struggle as we all joined knowing we would not get the traditional Greek life experience right away.

Acquiring the charter was hard work. All the meetings and milestones we had to make. And the time it took to earn the right to wear our letters became frustrating every now and then as I saw my friends in other fraternities wear their own letters with pride, but through these trials I developed patience, maturity, and understanding. When it finally came time for us to become initiated brothers and earn our charter back in May 2019, I couldn’t have been more excited. Since then, I have been so proud and honored to call myself a Sigma Chi, to live out our values among my friends, my community, my colleagues, and to the strangers I meet around the world.

I served our chapter in a few roles such as social chair and alumni chair. Great roles that taught me planning skills, social skills, and communication skills. These have greatly helped me in the professional world since I graduated in 2021. I am a social media manager and creator for my family’s mortgage banking company called Network Funding, L.P. I live in Dallas, Texas remotely making content for the company since 2023.

What Sigma Chi means to me is hard to describe in a short summary. But I will say it became so much more than I ever thought it would before I joined. The brothers and friends I have made through our chapter since I joined have been a blessing my family has prayed for since I was young. They are my biggest supporters, my best friends, and lifelong companions I will always be grateful to have in my life. To anyone reading this that may be a new pledge or new initiate, the brothers you meet at Epsilon Nu really can become lifelong friends and even your groomsmen one day, but please put in the work. Go get a drink with them, a meal with them, invite them to your lake house, ranch, trip, whatever it may be. Invest your time within the chapter, and your ROI will be met in spades of memories, strong bonds, and strong arms that surround you when you need them most.

I am so blessed to call myself a Sigma Chi and I continue to look forward to the memories I make with my brothers old and new. God bless Epsilon Nu and Wreck Em!
